The IEA's Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is an international study of reading achievement in fourth graders. It has been conducted every five years since 2001 by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. Currently 70 countries participate in the assessments, which have been conducted at regular intervals since 1995. For the first time in the PIRLS assessment, the 2016 cycle introduced an ePIRLS option for participants to assess their students' abilities to acquire and use information when reading online. The ePIRLS online reading achievement scale enabled countries to examine their fourth-graders’ online reading performance relative to their performance on the PIRLS reading achievement scales. The Progress in International Reading Study (PIRLS) is conducted in over 60 countries and compares education systems worldwide. Developed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), the study takes place every 5 years and helps understand how well Year 5 pupils can apply knowledge and skills in reading.

PIRLS is organised by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). PIRLS 2021 will be the fifth cycle of the study, which was first conducted in 2001. PIRLS 2021 is being administered in Northern Ireland by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) on behalf of the Department of Education.

In Australia, PIRLS is implemented by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), which is Australia’s representative to the IEA. In Australia, PIRLS is part of the National Assessment Program.
